Well, to be precise, the VCS can display 16 colors out of a palette of 128 colors and the Colocevision can also display 16 colors, but has only a palette of 16 colors.

And if we want to fight a system war the Colecovision has a Video-Ram, can display more sprites, has a faster processor,... I don't think the technical details of the system can explain the success of the VCS.
