hi

acetronic fans

there is a save the video game

Consoles, cartridges, discs, and tapes gather dust in lofts. Crucial prototypes get thrown away when studios go bust, rare versions of classic games are lost forever. Every day, we lose another little bit of our history.

We need a National Videogame Archive

http://www.savethevideogame.org/

have a look

Also check out this page: http://www.nationalvideogamearchive.org/

The interesting thing is that this can be the real entrance for retro games in the academic world, but I'm a bit confused that they've started a national archive. Imo it would make more sense to organise it on an European level. On the other hand it's an UK-thing not to have to much (visible) European integration and maybe I underestimate the significance of game development in the UK and it's importance to the history of video games? Some more questions can be: Do we need national video-game archives in every European country? Or only in the big ones? And what should be collected/preserved in this archives?

Would be interesting to hear some opinions about that.

I am doing research on digital preservation of interactivity ... which of course includes games as well :-) (or should I see "includes other things as games as well" ??)

btw, here's a few more links:

Computerspielemuseum Berln (a bit like the NationalvideogameArchive but in Germany and completly different ....)

http://www.computerspielemuseum.de/

and a US project dealing with preserving games ("virtual worlds" to be exact ... Second Life creaters are on of the partners)

http://pvw.illinois.edu/pvw/

There's always one more try – I'm not afraid to die! (Heart of Steel, Manowar)
