Bought both quite some time ago on ebay - the 400 is a PAL one with an added normal keyboard instead of that sensor mumbojumbo, the 800 is an NTSC one. Both are stacked up with extra RAM cartridges.
Love them four joystick-ports on them - at the first MiniAustro-Con held at my house back then, we played some games of M.U.L.E.
My first computer was an Atari 600XL with tape drive. Wasn't long that I traded it in for a 800XL with original disk drive. Third-party disk drives were only known from ads in Analog Computing (still the best Atari magazine ever) and someone knew someone whose friend had such a mystery disk drive.
I remember buying Activision's River Raid on cartridge with the 600XL. The step from the VCS 2600 version to the XL version was huge and we played it pretty often.
Rauch mehr, dass da Huastn weggageht!
I still need to get an 800. But I want a PAL one, and those are very rare and expensive " />
My first home computer was the new Atari 130 XE in 1985. Still love that system, many many great games for the Atari 8 bit computers!! I never felt the need to buy a C64.
Das taugt mir!
Aber mit wenig Ei bitte …
I just have an 800xl and a XE, but I need to buy a 400 or 800 in the future. I think they are much cooler than the later models. Anyway I have never seen them when I was young. Everyone had a C64 here and later on there were also som CPC user, but no Atari ones.
By the way my first computer was a Comodore one, unfortunately a C16...
The XL was pretty popular here in Austria, but I also haven't seen any 400 or 800 back then. The bestseller here was the 800 XL, followed by the 600 XL.
The C16, well yes, something like Commodore's “Virtual Boy”
It had a better BASIC than the C64 afaik, but I guess that was not what the users wanted …
Edit: Before we go offtopic again, we could start a C16/C116/Plus4 thread in the C64 forum ...

The 400 is definitely something special. Nothing beats that membrane keyboard in cool 70's space colors. Star Raiders and a 400 - they complement each other like Sergio Leone movies and Enio Morricone orchestration. An unforgettable experience!
